GOVERNOR TAFT ANNOUNCES OHIO AEROSPACE AND DEFENSE ADVISORY COUNCIL APPOINTMENTS

COLUMBUS (Nov. 21, 2001) — Governor Bob Taft today announced appointments to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council.

“I am pleased that such distinguished aerospace leaders have agreed to serve the state of Ohio in this capacity,” said Gov. Taft. “This new council will work with my administration and the legislature to protect employment and strengthen the economic contribution of the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the NASA Glenn Research Center.”

The Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council is a newly created council authorized by Sub. H.B. 230, sponsored by state Representatives Kevin DeWine (R-Fairborn) and Chuck Calvert (R-Medina), and state Senators Steve Austria (R-Beavercreek) and Ron Amstutz (R-Wooster.) It was signed into law by Gov. Taft at a ceremony at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on July 25.

“Ohio’s aerospace and defense industries are vital to our economy,” Taft said at the ceremony. “The new Ohio Aerospace and Defense Council will help advance Ohio’s agenda and protect and grow jobs in these critical industries.”

The council shall conduct examinations of existing and proposed laws, rules, and policies of this state or the United States that affect or may affect the growth and viability of the aerospace and defense industries in this state and the status of federal installations in this state associated with those industries; the council shall conduct examinations of problems that the aerospace and defense industries in this state face at any particular time, including problems arising from foreign competition or the economic climate in this state; and the council shall conduct an examination of technology commercialization and other matters relevant to the future of the aerospace and defense industries in this state. Members are compensated for expenses only.

Darryl F. Allen, from Sylvania, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2002. Mr. Allen is director of Milacron, Inc., and the director of Fifth Third Bancorp and Fifth Third Bank of Northwest, Ohio. He received his B.A. degree from Michigan State University and his M.B.A. degree from the University of Michigan.

Raymond L. Fitz, from Dayton, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2002. Dr. Brother Fitz is president of the University of Dayton. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Dayton, and his M.S. degree and Ph.D. degree from Polytechnic University.

Darrell Friend, from Cincinnati, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2002. Mr. Friend is chairman of Local 912, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

John J. Grisik, from Peninsula, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2003. Dr. Grisik is group president of landing systems, Goodrich Corporation. He received his B.S. degree, his M.S. degree and his D.S. degree from the University of Cincinnati. He also received an M.S. degree from Stanford University.

Courtney J. Hill, from Cincinnati, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2003. Mr. Hill is general manager, manufacturing and quality technology department, GE Aircraft Engines. He received his M.S. degree from Lehigh University.

John F. Lewis, from Bratenahl, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2003. Mr. Lewis is managing partner of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey. He received his B.A. degree from Amherst College and his J.D. degree from the University of Michigan.

Robert F. Raggio, from Dayton, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2003. Lt. Gen. Raggio is executive vice president of Dayton Aerospace, Inc. He received his B.S. degree from Montana State University and his M.S. degree from Purdue University.

Kathryn D. Sullivan, from Columbus, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2004. Dr. Sullivan is president and CEO of COSI, and is a former NASA astronaut. She received her B.S. degree from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and her Ph.D. degree from Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia.

Bradley H. Tidwell, from Dayton, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2004. Mr. Tidwell is president of Bank One. He received his B.S. degree and M.S. degree from Texas A & M University.

James W. Wagner, from Shaker Heights, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2004. Dr. Wagner is provost and university vice president of Case Western Reserve University. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Delaware and his M.S. degree and Ph.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University.

James C. Williams, from New Albany, was appointed to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council for a term ending Oct. 23, 2004. Dr. Williams is dean of engineering and Honda professor of materials at The Ohio State University. He received his B.S. degree, his M.S. degree and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Washington.

Richard V. Reynolds, from Wright-Patterson AFB, was appointed as a non-voting member to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council, representing Wright Patterson Air Force Base, serving at the pleasure of the governor. Lt. Gen. Reynolds is commander of the Aeronautical Systems Center at Wright-Patterson AFB.

Donald J. Campbell, from Cleveland, was appointed as a non-voting member to the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council, representing NASA Glenn Research Center, serving at the pleasure of the governor. Mr. Campbell is director of NASA Glenn Research Center.

Senate President Richard Finan has appointed state Sen. Steve Austria (R-Beavercreek) and state Sen. Tim Ryan (D-Niles.)

Speaker of the House Larry Householder has appointed state Rep. Kevin DeWine (R-Fairborn) and state Rep. John Barnes (D-Cleveland.)
