TAFT ANNOUNCES AWARD OF JUVENILE JUSTICE GRANT TO CENTER FOR CHILD AND FAMILY ADVOCACY
Monies Will Be Used to Fund Prosecutors for Child Abuse Cases

COLUMBUS (December 13, 2002) - Governor Bob Taft today announced a grant award of $126,498 to the Center for Child and Family Advocacy in Columbus. These funds will enable the center to provide additional services to youth who are victims of abuse.

"I am pleased to award these funds to the center and to support its efforts to prosecute cases of child abuse to the fullest extent possible," Taft said. "Every effort must be made to address these crimes against Ohio's children. I applaud the center for its work."

The Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) will provide the funds through the Federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's (OJJDP) Title II program. Created by the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974, the Title II Formula Grant is designed to allow states to address juvenile crime and delinquency at the local level. Funds may be used for a number of purposes that range from primary prevention efforts for juvenile offenders to programs that address youth victimization.

Under the direction of former Franklin County court judge Yvette McGee Brown, the Center currently provides comprehensive assessment and case management services for child victims of violence and abuse. The Center for Child and Family Advocacy's award will be used to fund two full time prosecutors for abuse cases. These staff members will work in conjunction with the other personnel from law enforcement, child protective services, victim advocates and medical professionals who are affiliated with the center.
