TAFT ANNOUNCES $3.9 MILLION IN HOMELAND SECURITY GRANTS
COLUMBUS (December 12, 2002) - Governor Bob Taft today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved two new Ohio Homeland Security grants, totaling $3.9 million. Eighty percent of the federal grants will be divided among Ohio's 88 counties. The Ohio Emergency Management Agency will administer both grants.
"I'm extremely pleased by the action taken today by the Federal Emergency Management Agency," Taft said. "These funds will help counties throughout the state in their efforts to better protect the safety of their citizens."
The largest of the federal grants - $3,935,119 - will allow county emergency management agencies to either hire staff or contract for planning assistance as they revise their local emergency operations plans. Of the total grant, $3.1 million will be allocated to county EMAs. (A list of allocations by county is attached.)
The remaining part of the grant will be used by the Ohio Emergency Management Agency to develop an Ohio continuity of government plan, a homeland security public education plan and a statewide communications plan, among other statewide projects.
The second grant - $50,000 - will be used to assess security, communications and other features at emergency operations centers on the state and local government level. Of the total grant, $44,880 is set aside for county operation center surveys.
These most recent homeland security grants are part of the 2002 federal fiscal year supplemental appropriation bill signed into law by President Bush last August.
Since 1999, federal agencies have directed more than $50 million to Ohio to
improve first responders' capability to respond to a homeland security or weapons
of mass destruction threat.
