Accessible and Affordable Transportation for People with Disabilities Anytime

Transportation access for people with disabilities anytime of the day has been an on-going issue. The purpose of this project is to ensure there will be accessible and affordable transportation services for people with disabilities whenever needed/wanted, regardless of time of day, and affordable transportation is not available it will be created.

Amish Community Project

The goal of the Amish Community grant project is to educate Council and other organizations in the DD community how Amish participation in research and treatment programs has benefited their community.

Grantee: DDC Clinic Center for Special Needs Children, Middlefield; Heng Wang; 440.632.1668; Award Amount: $20,000. Council staff responsible Kenneth Latham.

Choice of Employment

The essence of this project is simply providing people with developmental disabilities the opportunity to have more choices of employment.

Grantee: Heart of Hope Institute, Columbus; Michaele Hadden; 614.378.9212; Award Amount: $100,000. Council staff responsible Teri Clark

Co-ordinating Center of Excellence in Dual Diagnosis MIDD

Individuals throughout Ohio who have developmental disabilities with co-occurring mental illness (dual diagnosis) will receive treatment and supports appropriate to their complex interdisciplinary needs as a result of training, technical assistance, coordination of service systems, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and other best practices implemented in local communities.

Grantee: Wright State University Medical School, Dayton; Dr. Julie Gentile, 937.223.8840; $75,000. Council staff responsible Kay Treanor.

Data and Policy Research Grant

To provide Council, advocates and policymakers with clear and concise data and findings related to needed systems change and capacity building in Ohio by conducting research studies and analyses.

Grantee: Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center, Columbus; Barry Jamison, 614.366.0329; Award Amount: $120,000. Council staff responsible Paul Jarvis.

Legislative Advocacy Day Coordinator

The Legislative Advocacy Day Coordinator will plan a single grassroots advocacy day to be conducted at the state capital each year. The Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that successfully recruit participants, distribute materials, coordinate legislative visits, and obtain media coverage

Grantee: AXIS Center for Public Awareness of People with Disabilities, Columbus; Sue Willis 614.263.8076; Award Amount: $50,000. Council staff responsible Paul Jarvis.

Maximizing Resources including Technology for Housing & Supports for Adults with Disabilities

This grant will provide an increase of at least 100 units in availability of affordable, safe, decent and accessible housing for adults with disabilities, which may be accomplished through creative and innovative financing and partnerships with private and public entities. Also based on the individuals’ needs, the end result of the project will be the use of technology, a replicable model of financing options that can be used statewide, and configurations of housing included by not limited to 4-6 unit buildings with staff.

Ohio Statewide System of Service for Early Intervention

This project is to assist Part C eligible children and their families in Ohio to access and receive quality early intervention services regardless of where the families reside.

Grantee: Ohio Association of Services for Children, Columbus; Susan James; Award Amount: $166,000. Council staff responsible Kay Treanor

Public Awareness - Products and Activities

Attitudes shape behaviors that affect the lives of people with disabilities, such as hiring individuals with disabilities, supporting programs and policies that improve the lives of individuals with disabilities and/or their families, and welcoming individuals into communities. It is important that the general public receives messages about the strengths; capabilities, preferences, and needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and those they recognize the value of people with disabilities as contributors to our shared community.

Brochures, booklets and posters will be prepared, printed and disseminated. This includes Council’s annual Executive Summary of State Plan Initiatives. Activities and products will coordinate with Council’s current visual identity program and user-friendly style.

Promoting Direct Support Professionals

Direct Support Professionals will be supported in receiving training and supports through utilizing state of the art curriculum, on-line training and finding ways to network

"Reach Out" E-Diversity Newsletter

This is a Bi-Monthly Update sponsored by the Council’s Outreach Subcommittee to provide information to interested parties on the need to promote more interagency collaboration and coordination that results in agencies providing culturally competent services to the unserved and underserved populations in Ohio.

The scope of the project is to explore Best Practices in outreach strategies and other pertinent information that will be made available to interested agencies, Council grantees and people with disabilities and their families via the e- diversity update. The e- diversity monthly update will do the following:

  • Increase the awareness of services available
  • Increase awareness of grant and funding opportunities
  • Increase understanding of issues that impact minorities with developmental disabilities
  • Include an analysis & summary of polling
  • Frequently Ask Questions
  • Navigating the Service System
  • Various diversity highlights and Outreach Messages

Self Determination Employment MICRO Enterprises

This project is to increase non-traditional opportunities to produce income for people with developmental disabilities to obtain jobs of their choice, allowing them to receive and maintain jobs of their choice.

Sickle Cell Project

This project’s goal is of a statewide marketing proposal that would be to increase the visibility of the sickle cell condition as well as the knowledge of how the conditions much like other disabilities should be recognized and treated.

SomaliCan Newsletter

To make the Somali community aware of policies and common practices that is insensitive towards people with developmental disabilities and their families and to highlight information on resources, employment prospects and stories regarding culturally competent services via a newsletter.

Grantee: SomaliCan Outreach Newsletter, Columbus; Jibril Hirsi, 614.439.3034; Award Amount: $15,000. Council staff responsible Kenneth Latham

State of Ohio self Advocacy Organization

This project is to establish or strengthen a program for the direct funding of a State Self Advocacy Organization led by individuals with developmental disabilities.

Statewide Employment Leadership Network

This project is to implement a systems change in Ohio’s employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to have more choices in competitive employment.

Grantee: Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, Columbus; Teresa Kobelt; 614.466.7290; Award Amount: $35,000. Council staff responsible Teri Clark

Strategic Messaging and Advocacy Resource Training (SMART) Grant

This project is to improve the coordination of public policy and advocacy activities of Council through strategic planning, collaboration and communications.

Supporting Opportunities in Providing Leadership Training to Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

This grant will support opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities who are considered in Council and in the community, to provide opportunities for skill development for future leaders for Ohio and to collaborate with other groups to promote Council’s vision.

Sustaining the Sibling Network of Ohio

The Ohio Sibling Network will become stronger because staff will be in place to focus on the work of the sibling group.

Triple Jeopardy Statewide Network

This project will develop and implement a statewide Triple Jeopardy Network that would allow past participants and other women in Ohio to form the Statewide Network project.
