History of the Flying Wheel Logo

As the Ohio State Highway Patrol was being established in 1933, the responsibility for badge design fell into the hands of Harry Neal, who in turn assigned the task to Mr. Joseph Goldberg, an engineer in Neal's Safety Department. The badge design was partially inspired by a study of others, but the "Flying Wheel" was originally Goldberg's idea. Though he had difficulty selling the flying wheel to Neal (who jokingly asked if they were duck, chicken, or eagle wings), Goldberg had created our symbol.

The Flying Wheel, which is a federally registered trademark, is now one of the most distinguishable images of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

New companies wanting to apply to the Ohio State Highway Patrol for licensing:

Application for Ohio State Highway Patrol License - Please read the instructions carefully and complete all sections of the application.

Applicants/Products are evaluated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Trademark Licensing Review Committee, which is comprised of executive level Division representatives. These evaluations are taken into consideration when authorizing license agreements.

A representative, "non" Ohio State Highway Patrol, sample of each new product needs to be included with a product review form to be presented before the Trademark Licensing Review Committee. A product approval form must accompany each item, so make copies of the form as needed. These products do not need to display the trademarks of the Patrol at this point of the process.

Only completed applications will be reviewed, and you will receive a written response to your application within 30 days of submission. Please keep in mind that we do not accept all applications, and will license only those items that we feel are appropriate to the mission of the Patrol.

There is no fee to apply. We look forward to reviewing your application, and thank you again for your interest.

If you have questions regarding applying for a license to use the Flying Wheel mark for commercial purposes, please contact Jeff Grayson in the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Strategic Services Section at (614) 387-7432, or by e-mail at jgrayson@dps.state.oh.us.
